Is anyone familiar with a specialized associate position? It's at a top V100 firm and the payscale is different from an associate position.

Basically, from time to time firms need more attorneys, and they'll hire someone at a lower salary, but also working less hours, where there's no expectation of generating business or any of that stuff. Just come in, do your work, and go home. As long as there's enough work coming in, it's an easy gig for decent money, but you're the first to be let go if things drop off.
On one hand, it's almost impossible to switch to being a regular associate at that firm, on the other hand, you do get the experience on complicated matters that would allow you to possibly get an associate position at another firm.
