Secondment Re-Location Expenses

Hi All,

Does anyone know who is generally expected to cover travel/re-location costs for a secondment (flights, rent in new location, etc.) where said associate is currently in major city and the secondment is in another major city but secondment location is not driveable (plane needed but same time zone). Is it the law firm "loaning" the associate out to the company for the secondment or the company taking in the secondee?

You should talk to your firm about this, but essentially, the secondment should put you in no worse position than if you stayed at the firm.

This should include:
* same salary (and a ramp up/down grace period for you to get staffed) if you're coming back same cal year
* guaranteed bonus (e.g. months at secondment should be counted "as if" you made hours for that month plus wherever you are YTD/after secondment)
* rent/airbnb in new location
* flights/transport costs
* tax gross up for the benefit of the rent (this can be taxable)
* any benefits, etc. that need to be covered
* small incidentals

Hope this helps. I did a secondment (and ended up joining the client). It was great experience and got me outta biglaw with only a very slight paycut overall (lower bonus).

ENJOY! This is a cool oppty!
