Big Law & Worsening Anxiety

Editing this down a bit. I am getting more senior and I am not closely supervised. I have a very long leash and it freaks me out. I worry about making mistakes and I don’t think the partners really review my work.

It seems like most people just roll with it.

OP had quite a few grammatical errors as well. Maybe the stress is causing them to make careless mistakes.

OP, just relax. The worst thing that’ll happen is they’ll fire you and give you money.

I appreciate the humor. As far as the typos go, it’s an online forum who gives a shit.

Are you OP? A true OCD/perfectionist wouldn’t feel this way

I get this feeling. Assuming lit, the best way to go is just spend a significant numberof hours researching and then re researching and being 100% sure you’ve exhausted all avenues and possibilities as options when you make recommendations to the partner. I don’t see this as overbilling, but even if the partner saw it that way, it’s worth the risk of an occasional shitty utilization % to be confident in your answers and be right. And I realize it’s much tougher when you get more senior, and more specifically when the question asked of you is less often “how do we do this,” and more often “what should we do”? But yeah—spending time figuring it out is how I handle the anxiety and it’s been working for me so far

Yes.
People misuse the word typo on here a lot. A typo would be if you accidentally double clicked the same letter on the keyboard twice in a row or hit the letter on the keyboard next to the one you meant.

Typing an “i” instead of an “e” isn’t a typo (opposite hands on the keyboard) - you just plain misspelled the word “worsening” in a way that is rather odd for a senior attorney. Regardless, not exactly a big deal in the grand scheme of life.

FedFan I take it back. You do you.

OP I read the original post. I don’t think the level of anxiety you are describing is normal even in big law. I would suggest you speak to a medical professional about how you are feeling and how your anxiety is affecting your life (e.g., waking up in the middle of the night to proofread documents you’ve already filed). It sounds like you would benefit from medical help of some kind.

OP - I would definitely consider therapy. I started it weekly not long after joining biglaw and it's been immensely helpful. My anxiety was pretty bad. I think most people would view a bad anxiety week as waking up in the middle of the night worried about work. It sounds like you could really benefit. I block my calendar for 90 minutes and walk out the door. If anyone asks I tell them I have a conflict at that time.

Lol I never saw the original post, so I’ll just assume it was a personal insult? Relax, I was just pointing out a minor thing. I even said it wasn’t a big deal. Good luck with your anxiety
