Hello guys, I am currently a 3L looking for an entry-level position in ECEB. Is it possible for you to DM me or post here the firms that are looking for ECEB entry-level associates in TIP? I have tried mass mailing with rejections from several firms (Skadden oops) and silence from others. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

My understanding, and I could be wrong since I didn't participate in TIP, is that TIP/TARE is only open to LLM students. I would think that as a 3L, you probably wont have much luck until after TIP/TARE when the firms know how many spots they have left to fill. Did you do a 2L SA at a firm with a compensation/benefits group? If so, I'd start there.

My understanding is that firms cannot find enough ECEB associates, so I think reaching out to partners at your target firms is a great idea

I agree with everything said above. ECEB is in high demand. There are tons of postings in silicon valley.

From my experience, ECB is hard to get into despite the number of openings without previous biglaw experience in ECB. I had a glowing recommendation from the chair of an ECB group at a Chamber's Band 1 firm for employee benefits & executive compensation (nationwide). Despite that recommendation, I didn't make it past the screener allegedly because I didn't have any previous ECB experience (other than my law school ECB classes) even when I was applying to junior level roles.

I agree with this, unless it’s specifically an entry level position.

I work at a Chambers US Nationwide ranked EB/EC firm and I haven’t had as much luck as I thought I would. Firms are weirdly picky about who they hire into these roles (more so than corporate/m&a, it seems). I think it probably has to do with the fact that it’s really low leveraged and associates tend to stay for a while.

Out of curiosity, what firms are hiring this year at TIP and what is the tax/exec comp breakdown?

As a former LL.M. it's always interesting to see how the interview program is going.

I have access to a full list, but it would not be in my best interest to post it because it would reveal a ton of job postings that I am paying very expensive NYU Law tuition to see.

I will say that I applied to 55 firms and 13 of them were ECEB. ~10 were resume collects with no specific posting. Another ~7 focused on international tax, tax controversy, SALT, or some other specialty. The only postings I did not apply for had to do with wealth management/estate planning.

JD and LLM. Neither of which t14. I took an ECB class taught by the chair of the group and didn’t get a screener after JD and again didn’t get a screener after LLM despite the recommendation (where the chair stated I “mastered the material”), a reasonable LLM GPA, and an entry level ECB posting outstanding. I ended up at Big4 M&A in NYC. My goal was always to go Big4 M&A in nyc but after taking my ECB class, I wanted to pursue both Big4 and ECB equally.

Former tax LLM. Biglaw summers and part-time during school years in totally unrelated practices.

I can confirm biglaw experience is very helpful. I converted almost all of the screeners to callbacks despite having GPAs that just scream above average but not great. (Right around 30% for both T14 JD and NYU Tax LLM). I didn't participate in TIP because I locked up a Big 4 position I wanted but I had screeners (between 10 and 20) and offers well before TIP started.

Pursue the Tax LLM and you should have plenty of opportunities with top firms. The chances of landing a position without the LLM or a referral are slim unless you already have top grades.

I have not heard of any. Proskauer is the only firm that I know that has offered, and that was through NYU OCI's, not TIP.

Did anyone do interviews with Morgan Lewis? Those guys were crazy intense and extremely talented.

What is the Big4 offering this year with respect to comp? Are they still at $125,000 base with a $10,000 LLM bonus?

OP here again. The offer I got in the fall was $125k, $15k bonus, and $5k bonus for bar passage (or just rolled into the bonus if you're already admitted somewhere). You must pay a pro rated amount of the bonuses back if you don't stay for two years. (e.g., if you stay for 1 year, you must pay 1/2 of the bonus amount back). This was NYC.

WOW. That's a strong offer. Is that to start as an associate in summer 2020? I'm in Big4 ITS/M&A in NYC and got $125k + $10k bonus and very uncertain about bar since I passed the bar before I got the LLM. I tried to bump my offer up by $5k (either base or bonus) on three different reasonable grounds and they wouldn't budge. I wonder if all the Big4 moved to $125k + $15k.

When did you get your offer? Mine came in Fall 2019, to start in Fall 2020.
