I thought I'd seek the communal wisdom yet again. I am leaving my current firm and will join a new firm; while my future areas of practice are not set in stone, I anticipate that I will work in trade secrets and data privacy.

I took many IP courses during law school and so have a general idea of TS litigation, but I haven't the first clue about data privacy.

Does anyone know of a good book/source that would give me a Data Privacy 101? I would love to learn more about it before i join the firm if possible.

Thanks, Alive97. Is it worth the effort and time to get CIPP certified, do you think?

My trajectory has been real estate -> data centers -> data privacy. I have the US certification and think it was a waste of money. I was about to get the M certification too, but I think I'm going to pass for now. The membership fee is also way too expensive. My clients don't know what it is, so I don't think it's helping get work. I really think the certification (and somewhat the organization too) serves to just make money for them as they try and become significant in a growing industry. The test was hilariously easy though. I personally did not need the book (again, overly expensive), but I have a background in technology.

I also moved to a firm to fill the data privacy niche, but there isn't enough work to solely do that at the moment, so I'm doing a lot of tech transactions and helping with data center leasing still.

I see what you mean. I might need to rethink the cert I guess. The book looked informative enough after I downloaded the preview so I thought why not. I think that data privacy should grow as an industry in the future, though.

The cert is probably best for people trying to get into the field, i.e. they don't already have a job like you. That said I've seen a fair amount of job postings listing the cert as "preferred."
