I was recently speaking with a recruiter and she suggested that I reach out to the partners in the firms I’m interested in to gauge interest since this market does not really like to use recruiters for unposted jobs.

There are a few firms where the chair of the practice doesn’t do anything in the area I work in (the practice is something like Labor, Benefits & Compensation). Should I e-mail the chair or the partner who does the work I want to do?

ETA: has anyone had any success using this route or know anyone who has?

Why not both? If you're already in cold-email territory, emailing like 2-3 people isn't some faux pas.

eta: if you're not in cold-email territory, and have a contact at the firm, ask that person

I don’t know if this is the same at most firms, but the firms I’ve been at have always been useless when it comes to non-posted positions. I’d submit and recruiting would just tell me they are only taking apps for posted positions (probably because they’d rather not pay the 30k referral bonus for a potential future need).

Hence why I’d just consider reaching out to the practice group to see if they’d bite.
