Interested in anyone with first-hand (or strong second-hand?) knowledge about Greenberg Traurig NYC (litigation, if that’s relevant). I’ve read through all of the old threads, but a lot of them are people talking about other offices, people pissed about salaries and/or people complaining that it’s a sweatshop. I’m not disputing that it’s a sweatshop, but I’m finding it hard to get a sense of what that means in practice - 2,200 hours? 2,400 hours? 2,700? 3,000? Any intel on the people/culture would be appreciated as well.

I was told 2,400 by multiple attorneys when I interviewed there. I also believe it's black box comp after the first year.

Trying to decide whether I should accept an offer from GT NYC. I don't know when you had your interview but does 2,400 still hold (corporate transition)? Can you offer any other insights about the firm?

Lol I accepted my offer from them a couple days ago - so let's hope this is not the case. However, yeah it's going to be a lot of work from what I've heard. The redeeming quality I heard though was that there is less emphasis on where your work is being completed, in terms of ability to work from home. Doesn't negate the long hours, but I feel more comfortable if there is more flexibility on going home at ~8:00 and working more there.

What makes you decide to accept the offer? Do you know anything about their compensation structure? I know they pay market in NYC but I don't know if they match bonuses too. I'm also taking into account how they handled their summers this year due to the COVID.

I just accepted an offer a few days ago in a different office that allegedly pays market (don't want to give any more away about myself). Kinda nervous about the hours but agree re the lifestyle questions. Associates seemed more genuine in answering their questions than at a lot of other places. There is also no definitive hours requirement as far as I know, so I think it's more sink or swim. So you may be able to take on fewer hours but since bonuses are black box I'm sure they suffer.

I'm sure this is group-specific and at the time the practice group was severely understaffed (niche practice area). YMMV.

I knew someone in their Las Vegas office. I heard it was a way worse environment than any other firm in that city, but that the norm was closer to 2000-2200. Obviously hours requirements might differ in Las Vegas as compared to New York.

I worked at a peer firm in South Florida, and GT was notorious for being a sweatshop (and paid below even South Florida market). Whenever someone left for GT, everyone would always wish them luck because of the hours compared to our firm.
I don’t think they were insane, but I’m assuming around 2100+, which is a lot for Miami.
This appears to be the reputation in most/all GT markets.

From what I've heard Greenberg has some pretty intense hours "requirements" (in quotes because no set hours requirement). However, this varies across practice areas. I have heard anecdotally that the "dirt" real estate group does not have insane hours as they often are working in tandem with government agencies. Don't have any facts to back this, just from a friend's experience.
One just random note and I don't know much so ya know take it with a grain of salt, I think people overuse the term "sweatshop" on here. Big law has insane hours even at the most "lifestyle" firms. This is not to discount that some are known for more hours than others, but I think at the end of the day all firms are "sweat shops".

Fun recent research fact - Greenberg was Giuliani's former firm as of 2018
