Recruiter Fee Refund

Are there any recruiters on here? Or people who know how the process generally works?

I’ve been at my firm for a few months and I just got an offer to lateral.

I used a recruiter for my current position and don’t want to completely screw him/her over when I jump ship. I thought about calling him to ask about the fee structure, but I’d just be concerned that word would get back to my firm (this recruiter has a very close relationship with my firm).

I’m assuming a lot of it will get clawed back, but I can hold off lateraling an extra month (delay my start date) if it means a commission or no commission for the recruiter.

I know it doesn’t matter at the end of the day since I should think about myself and all of that, but would like to not completely screw someone over.

Recruiter fee contracts vary from firm to firm, but generally at BigLaw firms, there is a 6 month guarantee, meaning that if you leave the firm before you've been there 6 months, the recruiter will pay back 1/6 of the fee for each of those months you weren't there.
