Offer to return for 2L Summer Associate

I just finished my 1L Summer at a Big law firm and I currently have an offer to return next summer. I really enjoyed the firm and there is a chance I would like to end up there permanently after law school. However, I would like to explore as many options and I can before I make a final decision. I have several offers for my 2L summer and I am planning on splitting. To get as much experience as possible, I may want to split with two new firms. My question is, if I decide not to return to my 1L Summer for any of my 2L Summer, will I have any chance of getting a job there after I graduate? Does anybody have any experience with this?

I've never seen it personally, but I don't see why it couldn't be done. Just ask.

It's common to do a 1L touchback. My firm always has 1 or 2 associates out of a smallish class who does it.

I had friends do 2 firms and a touchback. I had other friends not return for 2L summer and still get offers from their 1L firm. My 1L firm made it clear that they required you to comeback the first half of 2L summer to get an offer for post-grad employment. I think the reasoning is that if you're not enthusiastic enough about the firm to come back one year later, what are the chances that you'll want to come back just over two years later, and why should they hold that spot for you if you won't hold a spot in your summer plans for them?

That said, absolutely no harm in asking.

I summered 2l at a different firm and all it took was an email to my 1L firm to get a full time offer after 2l summer.

YMMV but I know multiple people that summered at different firms going back to their 1L summer firm. It’s definitely a minority of people who summered at different firms though.

I’d definitely try split summer if at all possible.
