I would only consider forfeiting NYC V5 for Kirkland Chicago. Transactional work at both are a cut above the rest of the market. If you have a Kirkland Chicago offer, then I guess it just depends on how much you value NYC's vibe versus your wife's opinion + COL advantage. Did you list those practice areas as generic examples or specifically the work you like? If so, Kirkland is the best at 2 of 3 of those you listed in the nation, which might change your equation.

I'm going to disagree with the above. The cost of living difference/actual income difference is HUGE. NYC is the worst cost proposition in the country, maybe the second worst compared to the Bay area. Chicago is probably 20k plus difference per year in post tax income
The NYC lateral options aren't any better than Chicago from a big firm. I've been there

I would say the cost/benefit calculus weighs in Chi's favor if we're talking Sidley, Latham or Skadden. Sidley in particular has great public M&A.
If we're talking Mayer, Winston, Jenner (transactional, for lit they are elite) then NY all the way.
