Does anyone know anything anything about JD’s SD office and exit opportunities? I have an interview coming up.

From what I’ve heard, it seems like the SD office has a solid reputation in the area despite all of the firm’s issues

While I don't have specific intel on JD SD, I can say that Jones Day is often the best firm to work for in smaller markets. They typically get the best work and pay the highest. The anti-JD feeling on these fora stems almost exclusively from JD's pay practices in major markets. Don't let concerns about, say, JD NYC's pay practices deter you from joining JD SD if you like that office.

SD is a market paying market. I know Cooley, Latham, DLA and Gibson all pay market. So, I do think it’s worth considering JD’s pay practices if you’re likely to end up making less in a meaningful way. I don’t actually know what JD SD pays but I still think it comes into play if you stay multiple years.

And FWIW JD doesn’t really have a corporate practice in SD - it’s mostly IP. So, I wouldn’t recommend it for corporate work but I assume OP knows that.

Gibson Dunn hasn't had a San Diego office in close to a decade.

Anon here. Thanks for the input. I'm interested in litigation. It seems like the big three players in SD are currently Latham, Cooley, and JD.

Is it true that work-life balance tends to be better in smaller markets like SD?

DLA Piper, Sheppard Mullin and Paul Hastings are pretty big in SD as well. Lifestyle is definitely a bit better than NYC. My office clears out around 5-6pm (of course people log back in at home).
