Is it inappropriate to randomly email a partner at a v100 firm? They do a lot of work in a less-than-common area of law I’m extremely interested in. The partner I’m thinking about is also the head of the practice group I’m interested in.

The reason I’m hesitant is that my credentials are not exactly up to their standards though I do have some experience in this practice area.

Should I go ahead and go for it? Do I mention that I already applied or just act like I want to talk about the firm/practice area? I’ve read up on their history so I could mention specifics. Or is it ridiculous to think they would take time to respond?

This would have been a much better idea before you had applied. This is why the go-getters start networking right after first semester 1L finals, if not before law school even starts.

In this context, I don’t think it’s a bad idea, but personally (as an associate) I’m way less inclined to go to bat for somebody in this scenario. However I’ll typically talk on the phone to them and just once I was sufficiently impressed by the convo that I sent an email on their behalf.

I think the reaction to this will very partner to partner, but I’m not sure you have a ton to lose.
