Former JD associate, now at another Biglaw firm. In practice, no not really. Associates in all major-market JD offices work on cases pretty similar to other V20/V50. I never worked on cases that’d generally be handled by midlaw/regional firms. I mostly worked on well-publicized cases for F500 clients. Also handled some white collar investigations for HNW clients.

I&A folks were brought onto cases to help with responsive motions and potential appellate concerns. This is similar to my new firm where the appellate people will help general litigation with major briefing, but otherwise stay out of investigations, discovery, or trial practice.

In terms of compensation, I don’t think there’s a disparity between a T14 in New York versus DC, or Chicago, or the California (and maybe Texas) offices. Across the board, it’ll be lower than market. Comp in Atlanta, Miami (I think) would be a little lower than the major markers. And comp in Ohio/Pittsburgh/Minneapolis would be the lowest (but probably higher than market comp in those cities—don’t hold me to that though).
JD at least starts well above local market in the Midwest, and a lot of the people you see in those offices (especially in lit, where many top candidates prefer smaller environments) are significantly better-credentialed than typical biglaw associates.

It will be interesting to see what happens with comp decisions. This could be make or break for some people who have stuck it out until now.

Did any NLGs get a raise during their mid-year review? I truly expected it to happen since the summers are making more money than us but it wasn’t mentioned.

Raises don't come from your NLG coordinator during review. They come from Brogan in a sealed envelope at the end of June.

I'd wager yes--JD is always super conservative with these types of things. I feel like there's always a mass exodus but management doesn't care, save for a select few. They'll just bring in more bodies like they always do.

I’m an incoming NLG and was hoping to know more about the relocation benefits. I know they require us to contact their service to set things up, but I was hoping to understand how it works before reaching out to them.

Do they have a budget limit for moving costs? Or do they just pay to move everything you own in your apartment (to a reasonable extent, of course)?

I didn’t have a budget. They just set me up with a moving company who came and packed me up and moved me to a different state.

Not sure of the exact number, but salary adjustments are effective July 1, if I recall correctly. I believe the first check we see the new money is 7/15.

Anyone think current NLGs will get bumped to $235K since incoming NLGs are starting at $225K? Do all NLGs typically get the same bump?

As an NLG in NYC/DC/LA/Chicago, I'm very pessimistic that this will happen. I worry that the way the firm repeatedly cheaps out will extend to these basic raises.

Curious what other corporate NLGs hours look like. Right now I'm expecting to finish somewhere around ~1600 hours on the year. Got really positive reviews, but hard not to be a little nervous seeing layoffs elsewhere.
