I would like to lateral to a very specific firm later this year to join a niche corporate group. This is a biglaw office with roughly a dozen offices nationwide. My personal situation would allow me to move to most of these offices. Can I apply to jobs in specific offices and then, if I don't make the cut, apply for the other offices? Or am I probably restricted to applying for just 1 specific office? I have location preferences but would like to apply for the office which gives me the best chance of success.

Is this niche corporate group in all these offices? Do they post openings for all these offices?

I think this is a case where reaching out directly to the partners in the practice group would be helpful. Are they hiring multiple associates in multiple offices? I would think that if it's really a niche practice area, it's probably more than they're looking for one associate, and they don't care where the associate is located. For example, my group is trying to hire someone right now, and we don't care which of two offices the person sits in - and if someone gets rejected for the job in one city, it's not like we would reconsider them next week for the job in a different city.

If I were in this situation, I would send an email to the head of the practice group, and let them know that you're interested in their practice, and see if you can set up a time for an informal conversation. If they like you and are interested in talking to you more, then you can probably skip the whole applying for a specific position in a specific office thing, and instead talk about where you would fit best.
