I am a tax LLM Student at NYU/Georgetown. My second semester grades are not great and I received one C. I am starting a job at a non-NYC V100 in a few months after the bar. Do firms ask to see final LLM transcripts? I know this question has been asked for 3L grades, but I was wondering if anyone with an LLM had their firm check final grades/transcript, or if anyone has any insight. My offer was not contingent on LLM grades, but I am nervous I will potentially get fired if they see my grades. I probably sound paranoid, but I figured I’d ask.

I can't imagine they're going to fire you over this, especially if your offer wasn't contingent on grades - I haven't seen it happen before. What did career services say?

I haven’t heard of this happening, but I know EY requires graduates to inform them if they receive any grades C+ or above, but I don’t know what they do with that information.

Eh I think that may be office specific. I don’t have any grade/GPA conditions tied to my offer. I only one 1 person at NYU who has a condition tied to their offer but they’re going to the WNT office

OP here: I did hear of a few Big 4 offices asking for grade disclosures, although I’m not sure if they were WNT offices or not.

I’m just nervous about my grades and wondering whether they’ll even ask me for grades.

Am also a Tax LLM (at NYU) and would like to hear other people's input about this. I'll be starting at a V100 (in CA) and so far, I've gotten a C and a few B-'s second semester. Offer didn't mention any contingencies regarding grades either but I'm sure they could pull it if they wanted to ...

OP, did you hear anything from Career Services?

How in the world did you get a C and multiple B-‘s?! Did you take the finals? I remember the curves at NYU from a spreadsheet I saw and like 95% get B or above in a lot of the classes.

I wouldn’t worry, but you probably won’t be able to lateral for a couple years.

Response to 2013: Not a good reason but I didn't land this job until the end of April so I had the week before finals to play catch-up. In hindsight, I should've spent more time on classes instead of just job hunting. It's definitely been hard trying to study for the CA bar with this on the back of my mind but good to hear that my piss-poor performance hopefully won't result in me losing my offer.

You landed a job and passed, so you did it right, I guess. And HR will probably ask for your grades so they can confirm you finished the degree, but I highly doubt any attorneys will see it (or even care if they do).

Another NYU student here. I think you're ok, but if you really are concerned, you might want to speak with Clara to see if this could become an issue. I'm sure it's tough, but really throw yourself into bar prep.

OP here: I did hear back from careerer services. They said firms don’t generally pull offers/fire someone for poor grades but many firms ask for transcripts to make sure you actually graduated.

OP here: I feel your pain. I spent the majority of this semester trying to land a job, and I let my grades go as a result. Best of luck on the CA bar!

I’ll make sure to update what ends up happening to me (for better or worse) for future students going through similar circumstances.
