Contacting firm for an update

I had an interview with a firm 3ish weeks ago. I haven’t heard back. Is it ok to follow-up with them? How should I approach it?

I interviewed at another place today and I know it would probably be better to wait for another offer before contacting the first firm, but I’m not sure how this interview went and the first one was a better fit.

Any help appreciated!

Yes, it does not hurt to follow up. I would just follow up now and not wait until the other firm (potentially) gets back with an offer. You can just contact the HR person leading the process at firm 1 and ask them whether there is any update regarding your application. If they do not come back to you or tell you they have not yet decided (for whatever reason), and firm 2 gets back to you with an offer in the meantime, you can (and should) inform firm 1 about the offer (as that should speed up process).

Side note: do not be discouraged by how long it takes. Law firms sometimes have long internal processes with hiring committees etc. to get through, or there is a partner holding up the process because he is off on a 2 week holiday or business trip, the HR person is out, etc. My point: there are plenty of reasons it sometimes takes a while for firms to get back to people during hiring. But it certainly does not damage your chances just to ask for an update. Good luck !
