Summer Associate Part Day Off

Incoming summer associate question. What are the thoughts on asking to leave 1-2 hours early (3 or 4 pm) on a Friday to catch a flight? The available flights that are significantly less expensive and more convenient (direct, get to destination before 1 am), but would require me to leave early. It’s a weekend trip to visit my girlfriend, so having some time there on Friday would be nice.
Is this not a good idea? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

If it's just a one time thing, no one will notice or care.

Leaving at 4 on a Friday? You probably don’t even have to ask, if it’s anything like my firm no partners will be there and 1/2 the associates are out also.

Odds are that your building will be a ghost town at 4 PM on a Friday.

No need to even ask, unless you're going to miss a mandatory training event. No one will bat an eye at a summer leaving early on a single Friday afternoon.
(To be clear, if you find yourself in the middle of any projects when the time comes, I'd give the associate(s) you're working with a heads-up. Like if you're on a deal team, let your point of contact know in advance that you'll need to leave early that Friday. But no need to officially notify the firm.)

How about taking the Friday after 4th of July (which is on a Thursday this year) off? I'm hoping to take a flight home for the long weekend but it's only worthwhile if I can skip town on Friday.

That day is almost certainly a holiday at your firm and you’ll likely have it off anyway.
