Hotel for trip from NYC to Boston

Is it common for firms to consider a trip from NYC to Boston a day trip, and therefore not cover a hotel room?
I understand that it’s a short flight, but due to weather and traffic I figure a one way trip takes about as long as the train...so I’m going to take the train. The train is approximately 8 hours round trip.
I think they should be paying for a room. Am I being unreasonable?

If they're paying for Acela tickets both ways, and the interview is only for a half-day (hopefully in the afternoon), then I think entirely reasonable to expect you to come/go the same day.
If the interview is a whole-day thing, I'd feel like a one-night hotel stay would be warranted. It's tough to get up early enough to get from Boston to an interview in NYC by 9 or 10 AM, and even tougher to then have to stay constantly "on" until 6 or 7 PM followed by traveling back to Boston.
I agree that it doesn't make sense to fly. You have to build in extra time arriving at the airport before your flight (at least 1 hour) plus extra time getting from JFK or LaGuardia (or worse, Newark) to Manhattan (~1 hour). And the flight itself is something like ~45 minutes. And you'd better build in at least an extra ~30 minutes to account for flight delays at whichever NYC-area airport you choose. You don't end up saving much time, and have to go through much more hassle. Taking Amtrak from South Station to Penn Station, where you end up right in Midtown, is much more relaxing IMO.

What time is interview? If early, go night before.

I just had a half day interview in Boston and they paid for my train up from NYC and a hotel for the night before (9am interview time).
