Using a recruiter - OK to apply twice?

Second year looking to lateral from NYC to MIA in the next 4-5 months. Feel like firms probably don't want to pay a recruiter's fee for a junior, so would like to avoid if I can. I was thinking of applying on my own, and then, if I strike out, hire a recruiter. Was wondering, does this plan make sense? Will firms give me another look if I apply a second time with a recruiter, or will they just cross me off the list if they see that I've applied before? Thanks!

a similar situation happened to me. I applied to a job in city X on my own. The job said you could be resident in city X or Y. Heard nothing. A recruiter reached out to me about the same job in city Y. I got a callback. Sometimes firms don’t even look at self applicants, I think.

The recruiter may find out and get annoyed by that, but beyond that I'm not sure how that comes across on the firm you're looking at though.
