Junior Corporate Lateral

Very slow at work and seeing a few lateral threads has me wondering - how junior is too junior to consider lateraling? I’m a second year at a NYC V10 in M&A. I generally like the group, the work (to the extent possible) and the firm, just would prefer to live in the city that I’m from (NE city, semi-major market). I would only lateral to three or less firms in said home market that pay NYC salary, but am hesitant b/c I feel like I wouldn’t be capitalizing on this opportunity, all goodwill built to this point is for nothing and would have to start from scratch. Not to mention risk that life at a firm could be significantly different and/or more demanding than life now.
How much time do you think a junior should put in to really be in a good position to be confident they’re making the right decision? If I were to explore lateral market now with a specific firm but didn’t end up making the change, would that hurt chances of lateraling there at a later time?
Appreciate any and all thoughts, thanks.
