After you get an offer, at some point during the background check; you'll get like 48 hours notice.

really? thats interesting. assumed it would be before an offer as a further screening process (why waste an offer on someone who fails a test).

Why go to the expense of testing someone when you might end up not hiring them?
(I'm also not sure anyone can require a drug test as part of a job application - only as a condition of employment.)

CA DA's office here.
Website listed it as a condition of employment. Got job offer, they gave me date and time within a few days to "come back and fill out some starting paperwork." While at the office, signed some HR stuff, also (Surprise!) got handed a paper to take with to a local lab test location and fill a cup within 48 hours.
Nothing I wasn't already expecting. Also, just a note that at least in my office I have never, ever seen nor heard of anyone being tested after the test as part of the hiring process. Someone did get breathalyzed though.
