I’m starting Monday at my (smaller) NyC biglaw firm, but haven’t gotten the week before email yet... come at this time, bring your I-9, etc. When/should I email HR being like.. hey, just wanted to ask what time I should show up, etc?

Yes. Reach out to HR today and confirm what time you should be there and what you need to bring. I think I had to bring my driver's license and passport and wouldn't ordinarily have brought my passport unless I asked. Better to be proactive so you're prepared.

Thirding the advice to reach out to HR today. You start on Monday - you don't want to show up your first day not knowing where to go/who to bug.

For I-9 purposes, generally a U.S. passport (or green card) alone will suffice, as a "List A" document. Or you could combine driver's license ("List B") with a certified U.S. birth certificate or Social Security card ("List C"), but that's clunkier than just taking your passport along if you have one.
