Do you prefer when interviewers at a callback each interview you separately, or when you sit with them all together in a group like a conference? What are the advantages of one over the other?

I only have experience with the former, but I have an interview of the latter style approaching and am nervous about that format because it feels very intimidating. I am wondering how it will differ, how to approach it, any tips, or if anyone actually thinks its easier then let me know because that will make me feel better about it.

I prefer the group interviews. There are more opportunities to connect with somebody, and the conversation moves a bit faster. However, I also think that it becomes a bit disarming after a while, so you have to police your words.

what do you mean by policing your words?

I don't know about everybody else, but I tend to be disarmed by the more conversational nature of group interviews. It's easy to become too informal or say something that probably shouldn't be said.

The group interviews I’ve done have actually been decidedly un-conversational (though I get the argument above for those that are). They’re more like defending a school thesis or the like. I personally like them because you’re not as dependent on one person for how the interview goes (e.g. if you don’t click with one person on a panel you can still get a good energy going with the group as a whole; if you don’t click with the interviewer, one on one can be a slog). Also I find they tend to go more quickly.

As for advice, mostly just don’t get flustered, and remember to make eye contact with/speak to the whole group, even as you’re answering one person’s question.
