Rekindling interest after declining offer?

In brief, my decision came down to three lit powerhouses in my non-NY/DC home market. Though I’m (relatively) confident I made the right choice, I’m worried that, should things go awry this summer, I’ll have already foreclosed the possibility of joining one of my runners-up. Can anyone speak to whether this is the case—and if it isn’t, whether there’s any precedent for firms making second offers to previous offerees during 3L or post-clerkship?

Thanks!

You'll be fine. As long as you declined your other offers in a professional and respectful manner, those firms will not hold your declinations against you. They know that many of the people to whom they extend offers will not accept--that's part of the system.

I've heard rumbles about firms reaching out after the summer--a sort of "How'd everything go?" follow-up--to offerees who declined. Has anyone else heard of this?

It happens if firms plan to hire 3Ls. They’d rather hire people that received offers the year before that they liked than start fresh with new candidates (who often have worse credentials and didn’t receive an offer the year before).

OP- to the extent the firms you turn down are hiring, you’re in the best position to switch compared to other people who didn’t receive a 2L offer. If those firms aren’t hiring, then you’re SOL and won’t be able to switch.
