About the time of year people worry about striking out and not getting a Biglaw SA. Some advice for those who haven't mass mailed New York...mass mail New York today. There are about 3,500 - 4,000 Biglaw SA positions and something close to 2,000 - 2,500 are in New York. The rest is split up between the other markets, last time I saw numbers LA had about 250-300 and Chicago had about the same.

I struck out in CA being from CA but got a couple of offers mass mailing NY from a T25 and glad I did.

It may not be your ideal market but it is better than not landing a SA if biglaw is your goal...you can always lateral in 2-3 years to the market you want.

I've mass mailed just about every NY firm on the vault 100. Im at a T14 and sent tailored cover letters, and yet no response from any of them. I am a transfer for what its worth- but I was top 5%. Is it too early for firms to start giving out screeners/cbs for mass mailers or am i out of luck here?

The firms who I mass-mailed in June/July are just now starting to get back to me with CB and/or screener requests. It's not at all too early for firms to start giving out screeners/CBs to write-ins; if anything, you're coming in late. Get on it RIGHT NOW. Many, if not most, NY firms have already been giving out offers for the last two weeks.

No i get that, but i didnt start mass mailing until last week. So im not sure if its too early in the sense that firms arent going to start giving callbacks until they know what their offer yield is yet. Also, i've spoken to a lot of partners/associates at vault firms in NY and they tried to get my resume passed on but recruitment said its too late since callbacks have finished and offers have gone out. So feeling discouraged

Sounds like you're out of luck - many firms are having their last week of callbacks right now. Because of the rise to 190k, firms (esp in NY) are scaling back on hiring quite a bit and it sounds like people are underperforming across the board this year. My advice would be to not limit your mass-mailing to NY. I picked up 3 extra CBs in DC through mass mailing (albeit at low V100 firms, but a job is a job), and other secondary markets (Atlanta, midwest markets, etc) are also taking write-in applications. Send applications everywhere you have ties.

Thanks for your response. Yeah i feel like i got really screwed doing OCI during the new raises. It is rough out here. But thanks for the info! I have strong ties in Boston, MIA, and DC so im guna focus on those and hopefully something will come out of it.

but for OP- it might have worked out for you last year but i think it might be different this year unfortunately. NY just moves too quick for post-oci MM
