Are Thank You Notes Necessary

Title says it all: do we have to do this after callbacks? Writing a note to every single person you interview with at the firm + recruiting can often mean writing 10+ notes, and each one has to be personalized. It's also tremendously stressful to proofread every single email over and over again, then freak out and imagine you made a mistake after sending. I cannot imagine attorneys care about this - I wouldn't.
(interviewing in NY and Boston from t20 school, all v50 firms).

I’ve heard from several partners (ranging from V1-V50) that they expect thank you notes. Why wouldn’t you do it if not doing has the possibility of hurting you and doing it only takes a few minutes. If proofreading thank you notes is too stressful for you, biglaw is likely going to be too stressful for you.

When I was interviewing, I have been told multiple times that thank you notes are not necessary (I never sent any). As an associate on the other side, they're appreciated but I don't expect them.

I think in many instances, things that one does as a part of the recruiting process are far more stressful than doing the same task as an employee.. it's a stress-inducing position to be in.

Our CS people recommended not doing them, because in their mind, a good thank you note wasn't going to put you over the top in terms of candidacy, so it could only hurt you if you do accidentally send one with a typo or other error.

Most associates don't care but some partners expect them; I know one partner who says she does not hire anyone who doesn't send one.
