Moving reimbursement

I’m currently trying to lateral from one major market firm to another in a different city. My biggest moving expense will be breaking my lease. Has anyone had experience negotiating a lump sum toward moving expenses that I could use to cover breaking my lease?
Appreciate any insight. Thanks.

Get an offer first, then negotiate the moving reimbursement with your HR contact (along with any other issues you may need/want to negotiate, e.g., bonus proration). Even if the firm has a standard/theoretically nonnegotiable moving reimbursement package, they may still be able to accommodate your request by categorizing the payment as a signing bonus or whatnot. Best wishes!

Some firms’ relocation package may explicitly include any applicable lease-breaking fees; I know Kirkland’s does. Get the offer first, then take a look at the package to see whats covered and try to negotiate the fee from the firm if it isn’t picked up.
