V10 Junior Associate Looking to Lateral

I’ve been working at a V10 firm in NYC and am looking to lateral (preferably somewhere else in NYC). I went into biglaw knowing the hours would be demanding but I’ve found it to be too unbearable (our teams also tend to be leanly staffed, and we’ve had a seemingly high number of departures over the last few months, which may also contribute to the issue).

I’m looking to move on to something different. I’ve heard that most in-house legal positions require that attorneys have several years worth of experience. Is that true? What other lateral opportunities should I consider? Admittedly, my law school focused almost exclusively on pursuing biglaw post-graduation, so I admit my knowledge of non-biglaw legal positions is limited. Thanks!

This is exactly why I intend to start practicing somewhere other than NYC/DC.

How long have you been with your firm?

The market is hot right now so even as a junior, coming from a V10 you will have a good shot at making a lateral move to another transactional group. The problem with that is you have no idea what that will be like and could end up working the same number of hours.

Any other markets you're interested in? Secondary markets tend to be easier.

You could lateral down to a V50-V100, hours will probably be better, but they also might not. Biglaw sucks everywhere. NYC Biglaw sucks the most. If you are a third year, you can start looking for in-house. If you're a second year, just suck it up for another year or two. If you're a first year... then lol.
