Asking networking contact for screening interview after striking out

Hi everyone thank you for your help,

Rising 2L at GW, struck out completely at the NY OCI/interview thing for screening interviews—not a big surprise because I am at median. A couple weeks back I had a very good conversation/informational-type interview with one the partners at a firm I thought I had a decent chance at but didn't get a screening interview. I had dropped his name in the cover letter and he said I should follow up with him about the application. My reason for thinking I had a shot is a solid background in one the practice groups the firm is known for/has many lawyers in it.

Is it appropriate to ask if he can somehow still get me an interview, either a OCI, or elsewhere? And if so, what is the best way to do that?

For example I am not sure how to finish this sort of email (example) ...

"Thank you again for speaking with me the other week, I continued to research your firm afterward and was very excited to have a chance to interview at GW's bla bla bla but was disappointed that I did not receive a screening interview; I would still love a chance to interview, [insert appropriate request here]"

probably nothing to lose, but probably a long-shot.

Personally I think asking for an interview would be a little presumptuous. If you follow-up and let him know you didn't get one but liked the firm, would be very interested in future opportunities, etc. he'll get the message.
