I emailed a big firm's recruiter. She emailed back quickly to send over my resume and transcript and to let her know my practice areas of interest.

I responded litigation and corporate, which I realize now is a vague answer as it covers most of the business.

Should I have just said one or the other? Does it matter? I personally prefer corporate but wanted to sound open. Maybe it was a mistake.

She asked you to identify practice areas and you answered with the two broad types of practices? That is not so great. I would have at least tried to identify specific areas within those two that you are interested. Answering both and not going any further is pretty much saying "I am into anything".

And that made you really sound like you don't know what you want... like reading all the items off a menu.

Assuming you are a law student gunning for a summer position:

1. If the firm has a summer rotation, then it’s okay to choose one group but then say the rotation is appealing because you aren’t sure yet. Nobody expects law students to really know what they want.

2. If the firm doesn’t do rotations you should just choose a group.
