I interviewed for a lateral position with a large firm last week. I probably sent my resume in a month or so ago. A couple weeks later I had a screener, heard back a day or two after the screener, then 2 weeks after that I had the callback which I thought went well. It’s been radio silence for a week.

What’s the general timing on third round/offer or, alternatively, rejection post callback? I was under the impression that this firm was in a hurry.

You're not going to like this answer, but there's no typical timing. You may be waiting because there's a general partner's meeting coming up, or one guy has to sign off but he's in trial, or a host of other reasons. Or you got dinged and they're not telling you yet. No way to know, unfortunately. All you can do is wait. Best of luck!

You're not going to like this answer, but there's no typical timing. Probably not particularly uncommon. Most of my dings took longer than that. And you can find much much longer on here. In the winter, one firm waited about 10 weeks to ding a group of us in post-clerkship/lateral hiring, including me.

After how long does it make sense to start to give up hope, generally speaking?

A week is nothing, especially since there was a holiday weekend so bunch of partners were probably out of town. If you don't hear back this week, I would follow up on Monday. If silence extends for another week, they could be waiting for their first choice to accept or they could be interviewing additional candidates.

FWIW, at my firm you'd be notified of a ding shortly after the decision is made. The thing is, decisions take forever to be made for most people. Disastrous interview, sure, that's easy. But there's usually a big pile of "maybe" and "pretty goods" that linger from week to week, even if they have no real shot at getting an offer. That said, I've heard of people picking up lateral offers months after their final interview, so depending on how far into the "pretty good" pile you are, you may have a shot even with extended silence. You just need the superstar candidates to fall through for some reason.

I got my lateral offer 2 and a half months after my call back interview. I checked in every 3/4 weeks and received an offer shortly after checking in the third or fourth time.

What did you say in your first couple emails, and what did the responses say?

I just checked in asking for an update on the status of my application and reiterated my interest in the firm. The responses usually were that the firm was still in the middle of the interview process or had no update.

A colleague of mine got an offer more than 6 months after an interview. They checked in zero times.

Nothing. Silence for six months then offer.

There’s no pattern with lateralling as it is entirely subject to the whim of the group you’re interviewing for. I’m sure some lev fin offers got delayed last week.
