Summer Associate Start Dates - Flexibility

Can anyone report on their start dates for their 2L summer associate positions and their firm's flexibility regarding it? I have a serious conflict which may prevent me from starting my 2L summer associate position until memorial day next year. I am curious whether this is going to ruin my chances at getting a position at a big firm.

I'm not currently going into a SA program so I can't give you specifics, but keep in mind that Stanford and Chicago are on the quarter system, where people don't finish classes until June, and they still do biglaw SAs. So I doubt this is going to be insurmountable.

Get the job first. Then worry about this. You won't lose your SA over this. Some firms don't start until after Memorial Day as well.

If the start date is before you can start, it wouldn't be ideal -- you'd miss some of the orientation, welcome event, etc. -- but it won't be a dealbreaker. Get the SA position and then sometime in the early spring before you start, reach out with the HR/recruiter and let them know of your scheduling issue.
