Using a recruiter to add legitimacy to BL Ap?

I want to apply to a BL white collar lit opening. I have never worked in the private sector. I fedclerked then went to government. I heard through the grapevine that the recruiting coordinator, here “doesn’t want people from govt,” but it’s unclear to me if the clerkship would get me over that hump because it’s a junior position. I have gotten BL interviews (callback and post) for similar sounding openings at peer firms in the past.
My options are to go through a friend of a friend at the firm I’ve never met, or through a recruiter at one of the majors. I’ve gotten BL interviews by going through this recruiter in the past, and I know he has snuck in the fact that I’m interviewing at peer firms (in spite of no BL exp).
Is this a situation where going through the recruiter at the major firm could add legitimacy to my candidacy to prevent me from getting screened out, or is going through the associate always better even where we have not met?
