How to quit without a job lined up?

I work in a very toxic environment where associates/coworkers have been leaving. I am the most junior (3rd yr) and last to be leaving in my group. There is also a strong and probable likelihood that I might get canned. It is mostly due to the head partner who is a screamer and just cold/unprofessional. Firm management knows but doesnt care. Been actively looking and going to interviews but no offer yet. Im under heavy anxiety and stress. I need to leave asap.

I know looking for a job without a job is a lot harder, but if I were to quit before securing a job, how can I explain the gap in employment without sounding like it was because I am a shitty associate? I can get multiple professional references from other partners who can vouch for me. Alternatively, how can I strike a deal with the firm to keep me on the website (dont care about getting paid) until I find a job? Is this a reasonable request? Thanks for the insight.

Are we at the same firm? :?

All kidding aside, I'm in the same boat as you - looking to leave after about 8 months. I'm planning on leaving too but I've been pretty successful at simply saying "it wasn't a good fit". Plus, if you've been there for three years (if I'm reading that correct), I don't think it would be held against you.

Is taking a leave of absence a good strategy?
