from the people I've spoken to its mainly in house is verryyy boring and repetitive. say what you will about a law firm, but you are never bored there. the constant fire drills and pressure keeps you on your toes. in-house can be relaxed to the point of boring. I know anyone working at a lawfirm is probably praying for boring and cant understand this at all, but anyone who has had a regular deskjob before law school can understand how doing the same thing for months if not years on end can be realllly depressing and you just start to get restless and want a change

It can be a combination of a number of things, for example:

1. Boredom, as mentioned by ruski. Related, it could be a dead end job or you just aren't learning anything new.
2. Downsizing / acquisition in which you are pushed out
3. The in-house department and/or company is poorly run
4. Cost cutting - you are constantly squeezed to do more with less budget
5. Jumping the ladder - you can come back into a law firm at partner or counsel after spending some time in-house
6. Personal preference - law firm life is just more appealing to you
7. Change in personal life - maybe you bought a house and need more money, or moved to another city and it was easier to find a law firm job
8. Corporate politics - it's a different beast than law firm politics, and you may not want to deal with it

How difficult is it to move back into biglaw coming from in-house? I keep hearing that it's career suicide and nearly impossible to do.
