Transitioning into a different practice area

I am at a boutique firm in a niche litigation practice area that does not pay well at all across the board and has awful billables. How does one make that jump to a different litigation practice area without prior experience? It seems as though as much as I try to sell that I am well-versed in all aspects of litigation and case management, that still is not enough to jump into most practice areas. I'd like to do antitrust or privacy law, but my question is more of a general one. It seems as though being able to jump to a different practice area with no experience in that area is dependent on the hiring person just taking a chance on you.
