Reneging on JAG

What are the consequences? Blackballed from the branch, or other branches? C+F Issues?

I would be turning it down for a paid SA position with a big law firm

You'd be surprised how quickly the military forgets about potential recruits, so I'd think the impact with the military would be minimal. You definitely wouldn't be able to work with the same recruiters again though. Definitely no C+F issues, it's the same as turning down any other job, assuming you haven't already signed your contract and oath. If you did sign your oath you're already in and can't renege easily.

Probably depends on how far down the process you've gone. If you've actually signed on, harder to get out of. But if you only soft committed, it seems the same as any other job.

of the 5 bar exam c+f apps I've looked at, this wouldn't be an issue on any

JAG Corps is very small in all branches. So if you are applying next year for a direct appointment you might be blackballed but if you have more time in between now and applying it probably will be better.

I can say with confidence that you will not face any C+F issues with the bar. I reneged on a midlaw firm to go big law SA. Obviously, my story lacks the JAG element. For what it is worth, the Dean of Career Development/Recruiting at my school put it very simply: "You have to do what you have to do."

Call them up like a man (or woman if that is what you are), tell them the bad news, and never look back. You made the right call.

If it's just a JAG internship or whatever I don't think it will necessarily hurt you at all minus the slight boost a JAG internship will give you if you want to go that route.
