1L internship advice

How related should your 1L internship be to the type of work you ultimately hope to do after graduation? Can I use my 1L internship as a time to do something that I think would be a fun and exciting experience (as long as its actual legal work)?

I want to go the biglaw route after law school - probably in an M&A or Investment practice or something - I really don't know yet.

I received an offer for the summer to do capital defense work in NY. Would this be ill-advised given my ultimate objectives?

If you have specific public interest goals, it makes sense to use your 1L summer to do something related to them in order to show demonstrated commitment.

If you want to do biglaw, do anything legal with your 1L summer. Try something fun and interesting! Capital defense is a great way to spend your summer -- enjoy it!

Thanks, whiskey.

You don't think this is the type of thing that might raise eyebrows (in a negative way) at some firm? I imagine it's somewhat of a politically charged area of work...
