OPT for JD students

I have an LLM and applied for my OPT once after my LLM. I then did a JD and am wondering whether I would be able to get another OPT after my JD? I never used the OPT after my LLM.

I would appreciate views from people who have been in similar situations.

Thank you.

It's per degree level

As the previous poster indicated, OPT is per degree level. You might be eligible for another OPT from your JD program as a JD qualifies as a doctorate degree (falling under the "other" category) while the LLM is more of a masters degree program. However, I would take a look at the degree level on your I-20. It is possible your LLM degree program falls under the "other" category and not a masters degree. If both your LLM and JD degree fall under the other category, you might be unable to qualify for another OPT (even if you haven't used your prior OPT).

PS: Check with your DSO! (i.e. international student service)

My school said that it will depend on the individual USCIS officer.

Although JD is technically a doctorate degree by name, it is not a PhD either.

Upon checking my I-20, JD falls under "other category". Upon checking the i-20 for the LLM, it says "masters" and not "other". Does that mean that I would qualify for another OPT for the JD?

If I don't get my OPT, and I also don't get my H1B, is it possible to work under CPT by enrolling at another school? I've heard that this is another option.

The question is what you want to do in the states. Are you looking for a permanent job in the states or just 1-year post grad experience, because many employers are very reluctant to hire people with OPT, and as you may already know, H1b is getting harder and harder to get, even if you get big law, if you don't get h1b, you still need to go. Small firm may hire you, but they are just as reluctant. For long term, i think you should try to find a job thats willing to sponsor you h1b and see if you get it. I have many friends have jobs but can't get h1b. good luck.
