Curious what the options are coming off a state supreme court clerkship. Really have no idea about this.

Are you options confined to firms/opportunities in your state? For example, if you work for the Minnesota Supreme Court, are your midlaw/biglaw firms generally limited to Minneapolis? Or would it be possible to find something in, say, Chicago or NYC?

What about additional clerkship opportunities? Can you go from a state supreme court to a federal district court or appellate court?

Or do most people stay in government at the local level, for example by becoming a state prosecutor, assistant AG, etc.?

Just confused about what doors this kind of clerkship can open.

Relative to obtaining a future federal clerkships, the answer will largely depend on (1) what state supreme court you clerk for and (2) whether the state supreme court judge has some useful connections with federal judges. In the right situation, a state supreme court clerkship will enhance your resume for federal clerkships and can serve as a gateway to getting both a district court and a COA clerkship. This is true even outside of the state where you are doing your supreme court clerkship. If you decide to apply to federal judges, you may find that federal judges with experience on the bench in state court may value your state supreme court clerkship more than judges with more of a purely federal background.
