Taking an Interview After Accepting Another Job?

Sorry for the anon, but a lot of people from my school use TLS.

Yesterday I was offered and accepted a position with a federal district judge for the summer. However, today I was notified that I have been invited to participate in OCI for a firm. I'm wondering if it is acceptable to take the interview as practice, since I do not plan to revoke on the judge? I would withdraw within a day or two saying I had accepted a position with a judge, I just didn't know if this was inappropriate. Thank you!

Seems weird, but go for it if you really want to "practice"

I should have mentioned I'm a 1L, so this would be my only chance to interview with a firm before OCI when it matters.

It’s inappropriate.

This is only inappropriate to me if someone else really wanted to interview at this firm with an eye to summer employment, but lost out on snagging a slot. I would check with your school’s OCS to see if there’s a wait list for this firm. If so, I’d cancel and give someone else the opportunity. If not, I think taking the interview is no harm, no foul.

Whether or not you interview is up to you. However, if you choose to interview, then I think that you should be upfront with the law firm by telling them at the start of the interview that you have accepted a federal clerkship (they should treat you better after hearing this), and that you wanted to follow through with the interview because you are honored by the invitation and you are very interested in the firm.

Jesus the advice here has gotten bad after everyone jumped to the new site.

Absolutely do the interview. Reneging on a judge for 1L is really not that big of a deal, regardless of what your career services tells you. People do it every year and the judges will be understanding (though you’ll still burn the bridge). Just don’t tell the firm or your career services you’ve accepted the externship when you’re interviewing.
