Help! Long time lurker, first time poster spurred by a crisis. I’m a new associate at a V100. I had a bad encounter with a well known, rainmaking partner at my firm today and don’t know what to do.

The story: This partner has a very distinct blazer that he wears frequently. I went to wash my hands after lunch and noticed he was in a stall because this blazer was hanging over the side (I also could make out his fancy shoes underneath the door). I left, but had to return 30 minutes later to use the bathroom. He was still in the stall. As I was washing my hands at the sink, he finally came out of the stall. I looked up and made eye contact. I didn’t know what to say, and blurted out of nervousness “lot of Mexican food this week huh?”

His response was unintelligible.

As we finished washing our hands I decided to introduce myself. I reached out reached out my hand and said "I don’t think we’ve met I’m 'name'”. He brushed past and said sarcastically “my pleasure”.

Super awkward every time I see him now. What should I do? I’m scared I’m going to get canned

I don’t believe this happened because, assuming the first thing happened, you have to have realized how absurd it was. That’s why it doesn’t make sense to me that you’d introduce yourself by name immediately afterwards.

OP here. I know it sounds super ridiculous but I am not joking. I have really bad anxiety sometimes (different story I don't want to get into on here) and when it happens my mind starts moving a mile a minute... looking back it's ridiculous I did what I did and I'm so embarrassed. I think I was trying to be funny with the first comment but I didn't think before I spoke... then I was trying to save face by the introduction but obviously that was not proper etiquette either

Is there anything I can do? Should I email the partner to apologize?

No, do not email the partner about your comment re his bowel movements. Pretend that the conversation never happened. That's what he wants.

OP here. Thank you. Would you recommend taking 'any' action at all or just lay low and hope this blows over?

If this isn't fake, first, lay low. Anything you do/say can only make this worse. But more importantly, what type of low shelf firm has stalls without floor to ceiling walls?

I would email the partner first thing Monday morning (after he's had time to calm down) and apologize profusely.

Make sure to CC all the partners in his practice group and any others that you frequently work with. You want to counteract any possible bad-mouthing that he might have done

Order him lunch from a Mexican place and deliver it to his office. It will show you have a good sense of humor about the whole thing and want to make it up to him. Not talking about it just makes it awkward, bring it up at every opportunity and laugh about it, he will see you don't take yourself too seriously.

I barely just started at the firm I don't know the rationale behind their bathroom architecture decisions. Should I email the partner about that too? smdh
