Received 1L Summer Offer Without Grades--Is it conditional?

I received an offer in Washington, D.C. to intern this summer (1L) with a federal agency that gives offers on a rolling basis. I go to a T13 or whatever category you want to use. I applied early and was contacted early, etc.

I of course do not yet have grades, but I did interview early and received an offer already.

There was absolutely no mention of a conditional offer--just that I send my transcript whenever I get it.

I have a fear for some reason that they would revoke the offer if my grades aren't high enough for the position?

Or is it common practice to give offers without grades to strong candidates?

I can't imagine they would revoke the offer, especially in the legal industry, given that I would have had no notice of the possibility.

Your offer shouldn't be retracted for grades. You most likely were hired based on previous experience and your school. That's how most 1L judicial internships and early job offers are determined. The only effect your grades will have is whether the agency will offer you the chance to come back the following year (if they even hire for the following year without a new application process).

Thanks for the vocabulary tip, assuming that is the only purpose of your post.

I got an offer from a USAO (not DC), and they did tell me it was technically conditional on grades. It was more of a "we need to make sure you're not failing out," though. I also know some DOJ components require a 3.0. I think you'd have to tank pretty hard to have an issue.

Well, hopefully that is not an issue! Thanks for the anecdote. I already told people of my offer.

So it is not conditional if they did not say it was?

Other sources confirm this—thanks, all. Now to stay calm for about two weeks.

Same thing happened to me for a highly competitive federal agency, and I was worried sick that they'd yank my offer if I didn't get a 4.0 or whatever. I didn't get a 4.0 and they just said "thanks" when I sent my less-than-perfect transcript. Basically, as long as you don't fail out your first semester you'll be fine. If they cared so much about your grades, they would've waited to give you an offer until you got grades back.

Thanks for the reply!
