Imagine you are the unfortunate schmuck that either was duped by law school scam and went to a T3 close to family or you were at a T1 and just blew out at OCI.

If someone told you that you had to make a 300k a year salary within 10 years or you would die, what would you do? What are your best odds? Looking back on your life do you think you could make it?

Beg for work at a PI firm? Kill yourself? Hang a shingle?

Go mid-law, bust ass, lateral up. Also you can make 300k 10 years in at mid-law in a major market.

I've actually thought about this before...

Consider trying to get into banking (you'll have to start at the bottom as an analyst), but you can definitely pull over $300k 10 years into banking. Do you have a business/finance/accounting degree? Either way, you'll need some training/study time to refresh on those topics before most interviews.

IBD analyst positions are reserved for kids fresh out of feeder undergrads. They aren't going to consider some dude with a TTT law degree.

Ridiculous hypo aside, I would do a stint as an ADA in some flyover state and then hang my own shingle. Chances are still pretty good you die after 10 years though.

Chances are you'd die without hitting 300k even in biglaw.

Actually, the U.S. probably comes closer to the hypo than almost any other country.

Obviously, OP wants to make money (I'm on that team too #TMT). OP is simply trying to figure out if he still has a shot at pulling $300k 10 years from now. OP doesn't actually think he'll die, and probably won't hate his/her life if he/she doesn't hit that $300k threshold, but just wants to know if there are options out there by which to attain said threshold.

I think it will be tough, but anyone has a shot if money is the goal and OP is willing to put in super long hours and become really good at whatever he/she decides to do (though I think the odds/prospects are better working for a company, even in a non-legal role, than they are trying to work in shitlaw). Obviously, if there's a backdoor way into biglaw for OP, that's the safest way, you just have to be ready to work long hours and stick it out in biglaw once you get there (which is certainly a feat in and of itself).

Become an ADA, go to a firm, hang your own shingle.

I know of small firm insurance defense partners who bill significantly less than a biglaw first year associate who make slightly over 300k.

Become a city attorney somewhere that is growing, look for opportunities to become corrupt. I think making $300K after 10 years wouldn’t be too difficult.
