How much associate time typically gets written off?

Just curious.
Assume a typical 2nd year junior associate in litigation at NY V100 bills 2000 for the year. How much of that is actually billed to client?

Based on asking around, to me it seem like it's around 75-90% depending on firm, but more closer to 80-85% on average.

Varies widely based on firm, billing partner, associate efficiency, and client.

Varies wildly based on the task. If it's doc review you're probably getting your hours pushed through to client, if it's a wild goose chase research assignment it's probably all getting written off.

Does vary widely. But if you're in corporate transactional I've think it's surprisingly very little. On deals (as opposed to advisory work or routine transactions that come up from time to time), I've never seen a discount.

I have also been surprised about this on corp transactions. Very little time not billed though some clients do get a % discount on hourly rate.

Yeah we have a preferred rate for regular clients but little to no time gets written off. I see the bills sometimes for various reasons.

1st year corp, non-NYC big-law. As of earlier this week, I've recorded over $370k in fees, clients have been billed $320k and have paid about $275k. Somewhere in all that, my total fees (billed, paid, and unpaid) has been discounted by $22k, but where this breaks down isn't shown to me at least.
