Hi all, does anyone have suggestion of good questions that are best to ask at second looks, that gave you a clear sense of the firm and helped you make your decision? Thanks!

How many people in the interviewer's class year are still there? Where did people leave to? What's their favorite thing about the firm? What is their impression of [other firm you have offer at]? What are your hours like?

Nothing is really out of bounds for a second look, provided you ask tactfully {you have an offer already, but it's really an offer to spend the summer at a longer job interview).

What else interests you about the firm and associate life? The world is kind of your oyster on a second look, provided you have an offer. Ask about the parts that interest you about the firm, whatever that might be.

Not OP, but is asking about work-life balance okay at a second look, provided you do so carefully/subtly? Also, do firms pay for your travel for a second look? Assuming they don't.

Why not ask about it if it's something you want to ask about? Ask what a typical day looks like, how many hours they typically bill in a week/month/whatever, or how much you have to worry about seeking out assignments in order to meet billable requirements. Once you have an offer, you still need to be tactful, but they're now trying to convince you to join the firm for an SA, and further, associates in this conversation are much more likely to be candid and provide insight into life at that firm.

Agreed. To add:

I asked about work/life balance in regular callbacks and did fine. The idea that you have to pretend that Working 20 Hours a Day is Good is TLS garbage and isn't real life, especially in 2017.

Firms wouldn't try to sell you on their work/life balance if they didn't think it mattered to people when making decisions.
