Anyone? Would love to hear from people working on animal welfare cases or for animal advocacy groups...

This is one of the most niche practice areas I can think of. Probably not going to find anyone on TLS who does it. There's probably only a handful of attorneys that do this type of work full-time in the whole country.

"When Steve Wise first started out as an animal rights lawyer, people used to bark at him when he entered a courtroom."

Do you think this is more niche than federal crop insurance litigation?

The Animal Legal Defense Fund does animal rights work. Can't say I know anything about it, though.

The Milbank partner is David Wolfson and he's amazing (and also very approachable and willing to talk to students/get coffee/etc. in regards to breaking into animal welfare law. I highly recommend contacting him.

Actually, I'm the OP. Feel free to PM me! I was somewhat involved in this line of work in law school and can give you advice as to organizations to look into, etc. (I figure there are few enough of us as there are, and this somewhat assuages my guilt that I'm in biglaw and not doing this type of work now :))
