Took a bunch of tax classes in law school but have worked in capital makerts for the past two years. How difficult is it to switch to tax from another practice area without a tax LLM? Thanks!

Are you trying to make the switch at your firm or move to a different firm? At my NYC firm you have to be in tax from the start, no one switches/rotates into the group. I'm sure it varies though. At my firm there are more people interested in doing tax than there is demand, so they can be picky.

I don't know if there is a ton of demand for tax laterals right now, especially those without experience. You could talk to a recruiter and see what they think though.

It's not out of the question. I had a colleague who did this after 6 months in a corporate practice. However, it's not going to be easy. Get your network going and try to see who might be hiring.

Any thoughts on this same question, but going from corporate practice group to Big 4, rather than just switching practice groups? Do Big 4 only want former tax associates, or do they also take corp associates (those who took tax classes)?
