Dumb question about emails

Do you/should you respond to emails that don't normally require a response back, to confirm receipt?

For example, if you email the client/partner/etc. asking for a supplementary document/information/forward email/etc. and they email you back, should you email confirming receipt ("thanks/great/etc.")?

I know this is stupid and I never reply if I don't need to (I hate it when I get unnecessary emails). However, I'm noticing most people do respond when it's unnecessary, and I'm wondering if it's a big enough deal as email courtesy. I personally don't like it but wondering if I should change my habit.

I think it's a good idea to respond with "great, thanks again" or something like that. I think of it as a way to tell the partner/whoever "thanks, I got what I needed to continue working, and now I'm good to continue working." They probably assume as much anyway, but without your response they can't be 100% sure that everything is still on track
