Occasionally I see some interesting opportunities in the recruiting spam. Any downside to reaching out to find out more?

No downside. Start the rapport. And start figuring out which recruiters you want to work with and which you don't. Some are hacks, but some are genuinely there to help you find what you want.
Also, the lateraling process can take longer than you would expect -- several months. So good to get started now.

Lateraling firms can definitely take longer than you think. It took almost a month for me to clear conflicts after accepting an offer.
Also, if you're talking an in-house move, it seems to take wayyy longer. Currently dealing with that now.

Any tips on separating the hacks from the non hacks ?

Take them up on their offer to have a conversation and just talk with them. You'll be able to tell quickly enough.
Which market are you looking at going to? We might be able to help you with which are good/bad depending on the market.

Not OP, but I'd be interested in this info for SoCal, which I believe is the market you're also in...?

+1. Or, specifically LA. I've talked to a few and you're right, you can get a decent vibe from a simple phone call but I'd like to know if any are good or avoid at all costs.

I had a good experience and really liked:
Priya Gulati, Esq.
Senior Recruiter | Pacific Legal Search
1875 Century Park East, Suite 700
Los Angeles, CA 90067
(408) 666-7314
Some guy named JP I thought wasn't that great. His emails have been deleted, so I can't find his info.
I also get TONS of emails form Wegman Partners. I worked with Lindsay Stengle there--thought she was good.
I generally liked the non-massive recruiter firm feel, which is why I like Priya.
